General

What is Compass Cooks?

Compass Cooks is a monthly subscription box for kids aged 4+, that takes them on a global culinary adventure. Every month your little chef will receive a new trip complete with: 

  • 3 recipe cards each designed to feed 2 adults and 2 children. All will include vegetarian options
  • Essential spice mixes
  • Facts and activities about the country to teach your little chef as you explore together
  • A country sticker - proof of travel!
  • Fun extras such as cooking tools, iron on badges and more
  • Shopping list, which we will also email to you before the box arrives

 

For 3, 6 and 12 month subscriptions, your little chef will also receive a Compass Cooks apron and a World food map where they can also stick their stickers to track where they've been.  They will also be awarded a certificate every 3 months so that they can track and be proud of their progress in the kitchen!

We think it's important that kids learn hands-on life skills. This makes learning fun, reduces screen time and increases time spent as a family! Each recipe is designed to feed 2 adults and 2 children but of course can be adjusted as required.

What age range is Compass cooks aimed at?

We recommend our cooking boxes for children aged 4+. Any kitchen based activity should be supervised by an adult at all times. All children are different so will require different levels of assistance with different tasks. For certain steps involving cutting or working with heat, adult supervisors might need to take over to ensure that the recipe is prepared safely. 

The step by step instructions and illustrated recipes, along with the fact and activity sheets are designed for kids aged 4-11. The recipes are designed to suit the whole family and have been tried and tested on all age groups.

Will children need assistance?

Yes. Although how much will depend on the individual child as no two children are ever the same! As with anything, younger and/or less experienced cooks will require more assistance. For certain steps involving cutting or working with heat, adult supervisors will need to be more hands-on. We advise supervisors to read the recipe first to establish which elements require more assistance. 

Will we need any special equipment?

We tend to use standard utensils found in most household kitchens. Occasionally a recipe might call for a blender or food processor but nothing more specialist than this. 

Do you have a referral programme?

Yes - you can see details and find your unique referral code  in 'MyAccount'. If you recommend Compass Cooks and share your code with a friend who goes on to make a purchase, you will be awarded a credit to spend on Compass Cooks products or boxes.

Where can I provide feedback?

We love feedback as it helps us to continually improve our product. Please get in touch and let us know your thoughts. We’d also love to see your creations so please do send and tag us in your pictures!

What is the shelf life of the ingredients that you send out in the box?

Unless we specify otherwise, our dried ingredients and sauces have a shelf life of 3 months from the date received. 

Do we need additional ingredients?

You will require some fresh or store cupboard ingredients in addition to the dried ingredients included in the box. We will email a shopping list approximately 1 week  in advance of your little chef receiving their box, meaning that you will be able to shop before the postman arrives with the box. This means that excited little ones can get straight to work in the kitchen when they open their box! 

If you have time, we recommend shopping with your little chef using our shopping list which we include in the box. This is part of the experience, helping them to learn and get excited about the food that they are going to cook and eat. We find the whole process helps kids to become more adventurous with food! 

Do you send fresh/perishable ingredients?

We do not currently send out fresh ingredients. Going to the supermarket and choosing the right ingredients is a useful skill and can be made fun for kids. On occasion we might send out tips and games to make a trip to the supermarket more of an adventure!

What’s your position on sustainability - is your packaging compostable or recyclable?

We feel strongly about sustainability and are committed to reducing waste. All of our food packets are made from Cellulose rather than fossil fuels based materials. They are also suitable for home composting! 

It’s best to put the packets in your food waste or compost bin. If you don't have a compost bin/heap, we recommend including them in your regular rubbish collection as they will naturally disintegrate in approximately 12 weeks! Our box and recipe cards are also 100% recyclable. 

We encourage you to shop locally and prevent food waste as much as possible. 

Are your boxes vegetarian?

Our boxes tend to champion vegetables and where relevant suggest a meat alternative. We have flipped the normal way of doing things on its head to ensure that vegetarian versions are not an afterthought.

Where we do suggest meat, we encourage you to buy locally and sustainably, and ensure that the meat comes from high welfare animals.

Do you cater for children with Allergies?

We do not currently offer specific boxes catering for children with allergies. That said we do always highlight the ingredients that contain allergens within our boxes and recipes. We recommend you use your best judgment when considering dietary restrictions, but you can easily modify recipes by omitting ingredients you’d like to avoid.

Please be aware that our ingredients are handled and packaged in facilities that process milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soy, gluten, and sulfates. As such we cannot guarantee that traces of allergens will not be present. 

Will the box fit through my letterbox?

Our regular Compass Cooks boxes will fit through a standard UK letterbox (254mm x 38mm). If you order multiple boxes or include any add-ons we might use a larger box meaning that it won’t fit through the letterbox. 

Can I send Compass Cooks as a gift?

Of course! Compass Cooks makes for an awesome gift. You can send one of our subscription packages by simply adding the desired product to the cart and then select the option to confirm that it is a gift. You can also visit our Gifts page to view and send further items.

Can I get a discount for buying your boxes in bulk?

If you are having a children's party and would like to give out boxes instead of party bags, or if you have another reason to order multiple boxes at one time, get in touch and we can discuss the best option. Please use the contact us form or send an email to hello@compasscooks.com 

How do I let you know if there is a problem with a box?

We’re sorry if you’ve had an issue with your box. We hold ourselves to the highest standards and will be happy to resolve any problem that you have. Please let us know what has happened so that we can fix it ASAP. Please email hello@compasscooks.com to get in touch.

Managing your account

How do I update my billing information?

You can update your billing information at any time from your MyAccount page. On your 'Payment Methods' tab, you will be able to edit your Payment Details (credit card number). On your 'Addresses' tab you will be able to edit your Billing Address.

How do I update my shipping address?

You can update your shipping address from your MyAccount page. To update a shipping address, click the 'Subscriptions' tab, then 'View' the subscription that needs to be edited. Shipping addresses must be updated by the 15th of the month to take effect for the next month’s shipment. If you have missed this date please email us at hello@compasscooks.com 

Addresses need to be updated individually if you have multiple subscriptions. 

Can I cancel my subscription?

If you have signed up for the rolling one month option you can of course cancel at any time. If you have a 3,6 or 12 month subscription and you do not want it to auto-renew you can cancel your subscription at any time while still receiving the boxes you have pre-purchased.

Ordinarily if you have purchased a 3,6 or 12 month subscription you will have paid up front and received a discount for doing so. As such we do not cancel and refund these subscriptions. That said, we will look at cancellations for 3, 6 or 12 month subscriptions in exceptional circumstances only. Please contact us at hello@compasscooks.com and we can discuss the best option. 

What happens at the end of my subscription?

At the end of your subscription period your package will automatically renew and you will be charged for the subsequent period (for example if you were on a 12 month subscription and it renewed you would be charged for the following 12 months). You can update your subscription options at any time after purchasing, for example you might purchase a 12 month subscription but straight away cancel your subscription. You would still receive all of the pre-purchased boxes for the 12 month period but your subscription would not automatically renew.

We will let you know when you are nearing the end of your subscription, so that you can manage it as you wish.

Can I skip a month?

If you are on a rolling contract you can skip or pause a month in MyAccount . That said, boxes usually have a shelf life of 3 months so will still be in good condition if, for example, you are away for a couple of weeks.
